Things to Do in Joshua Tree This Fall 🍂

Fall in Joshua Tree is all about golden light, cooler evenings, and the hum of creative energy. After the long heat of summer, the desert opens back up — inviting you to wander the trails, connect with local makers, and gather under the stars. It’s a season of balance: crisp mornings outdoors, cozy nights indoors, and plenty of community magic in between.

🌿 Exploring in Cooler Weather

As the desert cools, it’s the perfect time to get outside. Classic trails like Hidden Valley, Barker Dam, and Mastodon Peak are more comfortable to hike in fall’s milder temperatures. For something a little different, head to Whitewater Preserve, where a year-round stream and groves of cottonwood trees make for a refreshing contrast to the desert’s rugged landscape.

Traveling with your pup? Fall is also the ideal season for exploring dog-friendly corners of Joshua Tree. We’ve rounded up our favorite spots in a separate guide — Dog-Friendly Things to Do in Joshua Tree.

🎨 Hwy 62 Open Studio Art Tours

Every October, the high desert becomes one big open gallery during the Hwy 62 Open Studio Art Tours. Spanning from Morongo Valley to Wonder Valley, this self-guided tour lets you peek into the studios of painters, sculptors, ceramicists, and woodworkers who call the desert home.

It’s one of our favorite annual traditions. We’ve discovered treasured ceramics here and connected with inspiring artists — from finally meeting woodworker Aleksandra Zee after admiring her pieces for years, to visiting the talented team at Manifest Ceramics.

🗓️ 2025 Dates: October 4–5, 11–12 & 18–19
