We want to take a moment to honor this special season and share some of our favorite things to do.
Pioneertown Mountains Preserve 🌿
Just a short drive from Joshua Tree, the Pioneertown Mountains Preserve is a hidden gem cared for by The Wildlands Conservancy. Trails here wind through desert canyons, shady nooks, and seasonal streams that feel like stumbling across an oasis.
It’s a place where you can experience the contrast of rugged desert landscapes alongside surprising pockets of greenery and, if you’re lucky, the gentle sound of flowing water.
One of the most beloved routes is the Olsen Ruins Trail, where you’ll find the remains of a stone homestead and, for much of the year, the chance to wander alongside a creek—perfect for dipping your feet in cool desert water.
Summer tip: Go early in the morning before the sun gets too intense, bring plenty of water, and keep an eye out for bighorn sheep or other wildlife that call the preserve home.

Whitewater Preserve 💧
If you’re craving the chance to literally cool your feet, the Whitewater Preserve near Palm Springs delivers. This 2,800-acre nature preserve sits along the Whitewater River, with year-round flowing water and shady cottonwood trees — a rarity in the desert.
You’ll find easy creekside trails, picnic areas, and wide-open views framed by the San Bernardino Mountains. It’s a perfect spot for families, or anyone looking to trade desert heat for the soothing sound of a rushing stream.
Summer tip: Bring a picnic, dip your toes in the water, and stay mindful of water levels (they can shift depending on the season).
Stargazing & the Perseids Meteor Shower 🌌
There’s more to Joshua Tree’s summer magic than chilling in shade—it’s a canvas for cosmic wonder. Recognized as one of the world’s great dark-sky destinations, Joshua Tree offers breathtaking stargazing year-round. Each August, the Perseids Meteor Shower lights up the night with dazzling streaks of light. Even if you missed this year’s peak, it’s worth marking your calendar for future summers—stretch out on a blanket, let your eyes adjust, and you’ll understand why the Perseids are a desert tradition.
The magic continues well into September. The Milky Way still glimmers across the desert sky, and this month brings a few rare cosmic highlights:
September 7 — Total Lunar Eclipse: The Moon slips into Earth’s shadow and glows a deep red.
September 8 — Moon with Saturn & Neptune: A close pairing that makes for a memorable night-sky view.
September 21 — New Moon + Saturn at Opposition: The darkest skies of the month meet Saturn at its brightest—perfect for stargazing or telescope viewing.
September 23 — Neptune at Opposition: The farthest planet shines at its best for the year.
